SUMMONER;

The name commonly given to characters which can call upon summon monsters in battle is Summoner. In FFIV, they were called "Callers" and FFIII also contained Conjurers which were lower-level Summoners whose summon-attack had different effects than a full Summoner. In most games, 'Summoner' was either part of the job-class system or assigned to a particular character as a special ability. In FFVII, any character could be a summoner using Materia and in FFVIII all the characters usually carried a Summon due to its relationship to abilities and commands.

FFIX's summoners were naturally-gifted with the ability, limiting it to two of main characters who carried their summons in their bodies and bore a small horn on their forehead. Summoners usually equip rods as weapons, although some have used whips (FFIV) or even flutes (FFIX). They commonly had two-colored robes and a small point jutting forward from their hoods. People with the ability to summon were usually more magically-inclined, and therefore do not attack physically with the same strength as other types of allies. Also, the majority of them have been females. They are also usually young because the phantom beasts only trust those with pure spirits, which small children have. The most effective and powerful summoners are supposed to be under the age of ten years.

While these have been the traditional characteristics of a summoner, in later installments such as FFX traditional summoners have broken outside of that demographic.
