Name
Jecht's Japanese name is written in katakana which is the system used for foreign words and proper names and it looks like this
ジェクト and is pronounced "Jecto." It was romanized to Jecht.
[Meanings]
The name Jecht is an actual European family name of German/Dutch descent. Also spelled Jeucht in family records, the entire name was von Jecht, the von meaning of/from in German. The name is found on historical records in Prussia and the Netherlands. It seems that the family name might be derived from the German words jetzt, which means now or currently. In 18th century dictionaries of etomology, jetzt is said to have derived from the word jekt which is quite close to Jecht. In German, however, the j in it is pronounced more like a y. Also, the word for itch in Dutch is also close to Jecht.
However, there's always a Latin root which is possible for Jecht's name, the same root word which found in English words such as object and subject as well as the word jet. Stemming from the French jeter, literally, to throw, which is dervied from the Latin jactare frequentative of jacere to throw. If this is part of his name's origins, it could be related to his blitzball abilities, as in throwing the ball or in moving very quickly -- ie, to jet.
[Numerology]
Numerology is the pseudo-science of using numbers to predict the future or gain insight. With names, it is usually used by assigning numbers to the letters in one's name to derive the number needed. Using JECHT, I did some numerologin' of my own. Here are the results: Jecht's number is 1. Ones are usually natural leaders, independent and individualistic as well as extremely ambitious, original, and courageous. They are often innovators and explorers. Self-reliant, confident, and energetic also apply. Pride, however, is their weak point and can be their downfall because they refuse to see their flaws or admit their mistakes. They value freedom and have a sharp mind.
[Connections]
If Jecht's name does mean now or current, it can well be seen to apply to his place as the current incarnation of Sin. That is his role throughout the game's actual timeline and is the reason that Tidus comes to Spira. All of the summoners' pilgrimages are to defeat him. He is indeed now. As for itch....I have no idea, except that he is very grating on the nerves. The numerology of his name fits him extremely well. He is all those things: original, courageous and independent. And he most certainly is too proud for his own good before his death -- "I'm the best" is his catch-phrase, after all.
