Lyrics
Here are some song lyrics which always put me in mind of Jecht. Following the lyrics are the reasons why they remind me of him.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Stevie Nicks)
My darling lives in a world that is not mine
An old child misunderstood...out of time
Timeless is the creature who is wise
And timeless is the prisoner in disguise
Oh who is the beauty...who the beast
Would you die of grieving when I leave
Two children too blind to see
I would fall in your shadow...I believe
My love is a man who's not been tamed
My love lives in a world of false pleasure and pain
We come from difference worlds; we are the same
I never doubted your beauty...I've changed
I never doubted your beauty...I've changed
Reason: This whole song talks of a man caught between "false pleasure and pain" who is a "prisoner in disguise." Those two phrases really remind me of the Jecht/Sin situation. Plus, "an old child misunderstood / out of time" speaks to Jecht's relationship with Tidus and how his son always misunderstood what he was trying to do and how in the end, they had no time for any kind of closure.
I'M NO ANGEL (Greg Allman)
No I'm no angel...
No I'm no stranger to the street...
I've got my label...
so I won't crumble at your feet...
And I know baby...
So I've got scars upon my cheek...
And I'm not crazy...
Come on love me baby...
So you find me hard to handle well I'm easier to hold...
So ya make my spurs a jinglin'...
I'll never leave ya cold...
So I might steal your diamonds...
I'll bring ya back some gold...
I'm no Angel...
No I'm no Angel...
No I'm no stranger to the dark...
Let me rock your cradle...
Let me start a fire with your spark...
Come on baby...
Come on and let me show you my tattoo...
Let me drive ya crazy...
Come on let me love ya baby...
So you don't care a darn about me...
I'll never treat ya bad...
I'll never lift a hand to hurt you...
Oh, I'll leave ya glad...
So I might steal your diamonds and bring ya back some gold...
I'm no Angel...
No, I'm no Angel...
No, I'm no stranger to the dark...
Let me rock your cradle...
Let me start a fire in your heart...
Oh come on baby...
Come and let me show you my tattoo...
Let me drive you crazy...
Reason: This whole song just screams Jecht and his laid-back, good-fer-nuttin' persona. He's certainly no angel and he is the kind of dashing rogue who would drive you crazy and then steal your diamonds. The lyrics convey someone who is lovable in an infuriating way, amiable and flirty and completely irreverant -- Jecht's all of these. The "scars upon my cheek" and "Let me show you my tattoo" clenches it. If Jecht's theme had lyrics, they'd be these.
HURT (Trent Reznor)
I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on
the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old
familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what
have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the
end
you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let you
down
I will make you hurt
I wear my crown of thorns
on my liar's
chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stain of
time
the feeling disappears
you are someone else
I am still right
here
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes
away in the end
you could have it all
my empire of dirt
I will let
you down
I will make you hurt
if I could start again
a million
miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
Reason: Maybe it's the number of times I've heard this in the last few days -- since the passing of the great Johnny Cash -- but these words have begun to resonate with me when it comes to Jecht. The bleakness expressed in lyrics is what I imagine Jecht must have felt battling with Sin all those years as Yevon's prisoner. Pain, despair, regret...all of those are present in Jecht's story.
