A first glance, Jecht is easily described : boorish, arrogant, conceited; a coarse ballplayer with a laid back view of life. And that's exactly what he is, on the surface. Underneath that, he's a father who deeply loves his child but had no idea how to show it, someone who is unable to express his own deepest thoughts. He's also a grizzled old blitzball player who is thrown out of his normal life into an extraordinary one, tossed into a world spiraling in on itself by way of the doctrine of a self-destructive religious system. In that respect, Jecht's experiences in much like Tidus's -- an age-old cycle of like father, like son.

[Early History]
Jecht lived most of his life in Zanarkand, the great machina-city which was said to never sleep. He became a blitzball player, and was one of the greatest; certainly the best of his peers. Of course, he knew he was the best, and his arrogance was a result of that. Jecht was the star player for the Zankarkand Abes, the team on which his son would eventually play. In his twenties he married a young woman who was madly in love with him. They then had one child, Tidus. Jecht appeared to be living the good life: famous, happily married, living comfortably on his houseboat filled with the most modern of machina conveniences.

One day, however, that all changed for him. Jecht made a habit of training in the seas around the city, practicing his moves in the deep waters. One day, when Tidus was about seven years old, Jecht vanished without a trace while following this routine. The people of Zanarkand assumed that their great sports player had died, and mourned him accordingly. Heartbroken, his wife seemed to simply fade away, as if she had lost her will to live. Secretly, Tidus always blamed his mother's early death on his father, remembering his mother as if she were a love bird, who could not live without its mate. Just before she died, a mysterious man named Auron appeared, stating that he was an old friend of Jecht's. It was he who took care of Tidus after he was orphaned.

Even after his death, Jecht was not forgotten by his beloved fans. A huge billboard of him, looking as arrogant as ever, stared down over the streets of Zanarkand. And once his son began his stellar career as a blitzball player, the comparisons between the great Jecht and 'Jecht, Jr.' kept his memory alive for everyone.

Of course, that was not the end of Jecht. In those seas near Zanarkand, he met with Sin, a fearsome sea creature who swept him up into another world. Jecht awoke in Spira, in a place so unlike his home. The only familiar thing he found there was blitzball, something which comforted the old player. In Spira, a new path awaited Jecht.

Jecht arrived in Spira ten years before his son would.
