Relationships

Tidus, sonTidus
As for father/son relationships go, theirs was not the best. Tidus always remembered his father as rather blunt and uncaring, never much a father. In actuality, Jecht most certainly loved his son, but was never able to convey his deep paternal instincts in a coherent way. His admonitions about Tidus's habit of crying and his seemingly harsh comments, like the one about the Jecht Shot, were bumbled attempts on Jecht's part to be a good father. He thought he was showing Tidus the way, keeping him from being discouraged. Still, Tidus grows up hating his father, even though Jecht verbalizes before his conversion into a fayth that his dream was Tidus, to raise him up to be a great player like himself. After his own journey, however, Tidus realizes the depth of Jecht's love and, by the time the two finally meet again, it's obvious that Tidus loves his father very much, no matter what words were said. When Jecht finally dies in Tidus's arms, chiding him sofly for crying, the depth of the bond is obvious. Read more here.

Auron, friendAuron
Despite their rough beginning, these two guardians do become friends, forming a friendship which would see them both through some very hard times. By the time their journey reached the Zanarkand Dome, I think that Auron cared as much about the tough blitzball player as he did about his summoner. Jecht trusts Auron with his last wish, entrusting him to take care of his greatest dream, Tidus, and leaving with him the task of stopping the spiral of death. In effect, Jecht dies so that Auron can continue to live. Auron, in turn, defies death to keep his promises to him, and becomes the only one -- except Tidus, eventually -- who is in contact with Jecht during his ten years as Sin. Numerous times, Auron makes references to fond memories of his time with Jecht and Braska, and expresses a wish to see his friend again before he fades away. When the two do finally meet again before that last battle, the seemingly casual words that pass between them are evidence of the depth of their friendship.

Braska, summonerBraska
According to Auron, Jecht choose to give his life as a fayth, not because he believed in Yevon or the teachings, but because he believed in Braska. Since the bond between fayth and summoner had to be a strong one, Jecht and Braska's friendship can be assumed to be extremely strong itself. Braska was kind-hearted, always allowing Jecht his problems and never being cross with him about them, unlike Auron. He must have understood very clearly Jecht's situation of having lost his wife and child, seeing the tough old guy as a kindred in that respect. Braska essentially gave Jecht a chance at another life in Spira and Jecht likely loved and respected him for it.

Yuna, an impressed childYuna
Although Yuna knew Jecht only a short period of time before he became Braska's guard and the tri set out on their journey, the memories she had of him were always very fond. He calls him kind and gentle, recalling his stories about Zanarkand and blitzball stadiums and a world with no Sin. Despite the seeming impossibility of his statements, Yuna believed his words, even ten years later when she meets Tidus. Unknowingly, their short interaction was symbiotic in that a child's affection helped him deal with being separated from his own son while Jecht's boisterous prescence helped Yuna deal with her father's departure.
